Freight 101

You Shouldn't Need a Logistics Team to Ship Three Skids

You have three skids of steel on the dock. Maybe it’s a couple of pumps, a small transformer, and some framing material. It’s too big for parcel, too heavy and awkward for regular LTL, and nowhere near a full trailer. So you start calling around.

That’s when it hits you: getting three skids down the road takes a shocking amount of work. You dig for carriers who’ll even take open-deck freight. You re-explain the dimensions four times. You get a quote, book it, and then the invoice comes back with charges you never saw coming. All of that for three skids.

Here’s our position, plainly: you shouldn’t need a logistics team to ship three skids. The freight is small. The process shouldn’t be big.

Why small open-deck loads get treated like a problem

Big LTL networks are built for palletized dry-van freight moving through a hub-and-spoke terminal system. Your open-deck load doesn’t fit that mold, so a few things tend to happen:

  • You get rejected. Many networks push back on shipments of roughly six or more pallets, or on anything long and hard to handle. Open-deck freight checks both boxes.
  • You get surcharged after the fact. Even when a carrier accepts the load, accessorial rules like the Density Minimum Charge and the Linear Foot Charge can inflate the bill once the freight is already moving. You budgeted one number and got billed a much bigger one.
  • You do the logistics yourself. A big shipper has rate agreements and a team to work the market. You have a dock, a deadline, and a phone. The market treats those two shippers very differently, and it isn’t the small one who wins.

None of that is your fault. It’s just what happens when awkward freight meets a system that wasn’t designed for it.

What partial flatbed does instead

Partial flatbed, also called open-deck LTL, exists for exactly this load. Instead of paying for a whole trailer you don’t need, your freight shares deck space with other partial loads. You pay for the part of the deck you actually use.

The sweet spot is roughly under ten feet of deck space and under about 10,000 pounds. Three skids of steel, a small piece of equipment, or a mix of palletized and irregular items usually lands right in that range. Open decks load from the side and the top, so oversized and odd-shaped pieces work alongside standard pallets.

Here’s the part that matters most for your budget: the quote is locked in. It is not exposed to the Density Minimum Charge or the Linear Foot Charge. We quote a number, and that is the number. A locked-in quote is a feature, not a favor.

The whole process, without the logistics department

Getting your three skids moving comes down to three steps:

  1. Get a quote priced for the space your freight needs. Give us the dimensions and weight, and you get a number built around the deck space you’ll use.
  2. Schedule pickup and securement with one point of contact. A real person owns your shipment. Freight gets chained and secured at rated points to spec, not left to chance.
  3. Rest easy with no surprise accessorials. The locked-in quote is the bill. And because partial loads can dispatch direct from origin to destination, your freight skips the terminal shuffle, which means fewer handoffs and less chance of damage.

That’s the whole thing. No hunting for carriers, no re-explaining your load five times, no bracing for the invoice.

When it isn’t the right fit

We’ll tell you when partial flatbed isn’t your best move, because that’s the honest part of the job:

  • If your freight is palletized dry-van freight and doesn’t need an open deck, Volume LTL gives you shared-truckload economics without a whole truck.
  • If the load outgrows partial and needs a full trailer, oversized permits, or specialty open-deck, Comet National Shipping handles full flatbed, full van, reefer, and more.
  • If a load already went wrong, a carrier fell through, or freight got refused, our Distressed Load Recovery and Rework services step in to re-secure and re-deliver so the project stays on schedule.

When the right mode is a cheaper one, or the sister brand, we’ll point you there. That’s how everybody wins: you pay only for the deck you use, the carrier fills empty space, and your freight moves.
